Telomeres are hexameric sequences at the ends of chromosomes that protect the chromosome from damage. Short telomeres are the cause of many telomere-associated diseases, such as Dyskeratosis Congenita. My goal is to elucidate the mechanisms underlying telomere length homeostasis, and their physiological implications. I will use high-throughput shRNA screening to discover novel pathways and proteins involved in this process. Furthermore, I will utilize the telomerase knockout mouse and bone marrow transplant model to evaluate the role of short telomeres and telomerase in hematopoiesis and stem cell self-renewal.
