Elite Suppressors of HIV-1Infection.
The vast majority of patients who are infected with HIV-1 progress rapidly, with declining CD4+ T cell counts, and a steadily rising RNA viral load, until they succumb to AIDS. Elite suppressors maintain clinical undetectable viral loads (less than 50 RNA copies/ML) in the absence of anti-retroviral thereapy. I am working to identify host and viral factors which contribute to this unique disease phenotype. Hopefully, once these factors are better understood, we can translate that knowledge into a working, therapeutic vaccine for HIV-1 infection
