I am studying the role of epigenetics as a mediator of the interaction between genome and environment. Previous research has shown that DNA CpG methylation can vary greatly between individuals, and that this variation can be correlated to phenotypes, including disease. However, the exact relationship between these three components – genome, epigenome, and environment/phenotype – remains unclear. My project thus aims to identify and describe the effects of environmental stresses (e.g. diet) on the epigenome, and how these effects may be modulated by an individual’s genetic background.
