The unifying feature of fibrotic diseases is the unregulated accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins (e.g. fibrillar collagens) leading to progressive organ dysfunction and eventual failure. My project is focused on identifying and targeting, through genetic and pharmacological methods, the factors required to establish the pathological levels of fibrillar collagen synthesis and secretion. So far this has been an unexplored route for therapeutic development in these diseases, but one we believe could halt disease progression.
