Role of IL-10 in Fatal Alphavirus Encepalomyelitis

In the lab we focus on viral infections and the immune repsonse to those infections in the CNS. My project utilizes a strain of Sindbis virus that has been passaged to increase it’s neurovirulence to the point where it is fatal in weanling C57Bl/6 mice. There is a critical balance that needs to be maintained in the CNS to have enough of an immune repsonse to contain the virus, but not so much inflammation as to kill neurons. IL-10 is a cytokine that is known to have anti-inflammatory effects on the immune response. I am investigating the role of IL-10 in fatal alphavirus encephalomyelitis both in regards to the effects it has on immune regulation in the CNS and also it’s possible effects as a neuroprotective cytokine
