Immunologic role that activated platelet play during acute SIV/HIV infection

The prevalence of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders has risen even in the face of significant advances in our knowledge of HIV/AIDS. Platelets are tiny anucleate blood cells that play a significant role in both hemostasis and innate immunity. We have found that platelets are activated during acute infection in our SIV-infected macaque model, and the Retrovirus lab has been able to demonstrate that the magnitude of platelet decline during late infection is predictive for the development of CNS disease in both macaques and humans. I am interested in the immunologic role that activated platelet play during acute SIV/HIV infection and in the pathogenesis of CNS disease.
